Sarah Egerton was born in 1782, the daughter of the Reverend Peter Fisher, rector of Little Torrington, Devonshire. She first appeared on the stage on 3 December 1803 at Bath as Emma in “The Marriage Promise”. She married the actor-manager Daniel Egerton in 1811. After other appearances at Bath and Birmingham, she made her debut at Covent Garden on 25 February 1811 as Juliet. She acted in melodramas mainly, and on 12 March 1816 she appeared as Meg Merrilies in “Guy Mannering”, the role in which De Wilde depicts her (G0188). Portraits of her as Madge Wildfire in “The Heart of Midlothian” were painted by Brooks, Cruikshank and Drummond; she first acted that role at the Surrey Theatre on 13 January 1819. Sarah Egerton continued to appear in London, at Covent Garden, Drury Lane and Sadler’s Wells; at the last, in 1821, she was a great success in the title role in “Joan of Arc”. After the death of her husband in 1835 she retired from the stage. Mrs Egerton died at Chelsea on 3 August 1847 and was buried in Chelsea churchyard.
