Biography

The painter Alfred Elmore, shown as No. 31 in O’Neil’s painting of a game in the Garrick Club Billiards Room, was born at Clonakilty, Cork, in 1815, and at the age of 19 he exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1877, and died in London on 24 January 1881. He was best known for his semi-historical works, including ‘Mary Queen of Scots,’ ‘After the Fall,’ and ‘Lucretia Borgia.’ Elmore became a member of the Garrick Club in February 1863.
