Biography

Born in 1859, Norman Forbes-Robertson was the third son of the Aberdeen art critic and journalist John Forbes-Robertson and his wife Frances (née Cott). His eldest brother was the distinguished actor-manager Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson (1853-1937), noticed above. His brothers Ian (1858-1936) and Eric (1865-1935), who took the name John Kelt) were also actors, as was his son Frank. Norman made his debut at the Gaiety Theatre in 1875, using the name Norman Forbes. He managed the Globe for some time and was associated with other London managements. Forbes-Robertson wrote several plays and adapted for the stage “The Scarlet Letter” and “The Man in the Iron Mask”, in which he played Louis XIV and Marchiali, respectively. He became a member of the Garrick Club in January 1907. (OCT)
