Biography
Robert Michael Havers, shown as No. 31 in Gilroy’s painting of the Garrick Club Outing in 1967, was born on 10 March 1923, the son of Sir Cecil Havers and his wife Enid (née Snelling). He was educated at Westminster School and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and was called to the Bar, Inner Temple, in 1948. His distinguished career in the law and public service culminated in his being appointed Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain in 1987. He was knighted in 1972. In October 1954 he had become a member of the Garrick Club. He was co-author of “The Royal Baccarat Scandal” (1977, made into a play by Royce Ryton), “Tragedy in Three Voices” (1980), “The Poisoned Life of Mrs Maybrick” (1977) and “Murder With A Double Tongue” (1978).
