Biography
Evelyn Laye was born in London on 10 July 1900, the daughter of Gilbert Laye and his wife Evelyn (née Froud). She first appeared on the stage as Nag-Ping in “Mr Wu” at Brighton in August 1915. She made her London debut in the revue “Honi Soit” at the East Ham Palace on 24 Aril 1916. Her career extended some 61 years, during which she acted numerous roles in London, New York and on tour. She received the CBE in 1973, and she died in February 1996. In the picture of the Garrick Club Outing (G0892) she is seen with her husband Frank Lawton.
