Biography
Christopher Robin Milne was born on 21 August 1920, the son of Alan Alexander Milne, who wrote the popular series of Winnie the Pooh stories in which Christopher Robin was often featured. His mother was Dorothy Daphne Milne (née Selincourt). He served in the Royal Engineers in the Second World War.
The drawing by Shepard (G0608) depicts him as a young child. Christopher Robin Milne was blessed and cursed by being so closely associated with the Pooh stories. He was a bookseller and author of a number of books and stories, including “The Enchanted Places” (1976, the story of his childhood and relations with his parents), “The Path Through the Trees” (1979, the story of his adult life), “The Hollow on the Hill” (1982) and “The Open Garden” (1988). “Beyond the World of Pooh”, a collection of his essays, was published in 2000. Milne joined the Garrick Club in March 1976, but resigned in November 1984. He died on 20 April 1996, leaving his wife Leisley de Selincourt, a cousin whom he had married against his parents’ wishes, and a daughter Clare.
