Biography

O’Neil was born at St Petersburg, Russia. In 1823, his British parents brought him to England, at the age of six. Thirteen years later, aged nineteen, he entered the Royal Academy Schools. He specialized in history and biblical painting. His work was frequently of indifferent quality and it always carried a strong Victorian flavour. In 1844, the Prince Consort bought his ‘Boaz and Ruth.’ The Garrick Club possesses several portraits by him, including a group portrait, painted in 1869, of 44 Garrick members around the billiard table. O’Neil had several publications to his name, including “Lectures on Painting delivered at the Royal Academy”, and he was also a talented amateur performer on the violin. O’Neil became a member of the Garrick Club in 1860.
