Biography

Italian actress, renowned tragedienne, born in Cividale del Friuli, daughter of a strolling player. She joined the Sardinian company, and in two years had advanced to eading lady. Best recognised for her performances as Mary Stuart in Friedrich Schiller's play of the same name. She played the role for the first time at 18 in an Italian rendition. Ristori also gained fame on the French, Spanish, American, Australian and British stages: her first appearance in London being in 1856 at the Lyceum. She returned the following summer to play Lady Macbeth.
