Biography

Peter Sallis was born in Twickenham on 1 February 1921, the son of Harry Sallis and his wife Dorothy Ann Frances (née Barnard). He trained for the stage at RADA. After making his professional debut as a Soldier and a Servant in "The Scheming Lieutenant" at the Arts in September 1946, he worked in various repertory theatres, and in May 1951 he returned to London to act Fedotik in "The Three Sisters" at the Aldwych. Subsequently he was seen at numerous London theatres in a variety of roles, including Waitwell in "The Way of the World", Retrosi in "Venice Preserv’d", Joe Scanlon in "The Matchmaker", the Stage Manager in Orson Welles’s production of "Moby Dick" at the Duke of York’s in June 1955, Simon and Barère in "Danton’s Death" at the Lyric, Hammersmith, January-April 1959, and Roat in "Wait Until Dark" at the Strand, July 1966. His films include "Anastasia", "The Doctor’s Dilemma", "The Scapegoat" and "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning". He also has appeared on a number of television shows, including "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "The Carol Burnett Show" and "Last of the Summer Wine". Sallis became a member of the Garrick Club in December 1978. (WWT17)
