Biography

Marie Tempest was born in London on 15 July 1866, the daughter of Edwin and Sarah Etherington. After making her first appearances in musical comedy beginning in 1885, she took on regular comedy roles in 1899 and was seen as Nell Gwyn in "English Nell" in 1900 and Becky Sharp in 1901. She played numerous roles for more than 50 years on the stage in London, New York and on extensive tours throughout the world. Among her many charming portrayals were Judith Bliss in "Hay Fever", Olivia in "Mr Pim Passes By" and Mrs Nolan in "Midsummer Madness" (the role in which Sherington depicted her, G0795). In 1935 she celebrated her stage jubilee with a command performance at Drury Lane before George V and Queen Mary with scenes from "The Marriage of Kitty" and "Little Catherine". She was made DBE in 1937 and died on 14 October 1942. (OCT)
