Biography
Kate Vaughan, whose real name was Catherine Candelon, a child of a theatre musician, was trained as a dancer and inaugurated a new school of ‘skirt-dancing.’ She also performed in burlesques at the Gaiety from 1876 to 1883 and then turned to standard comedy, appearing in such roles as Lydia Languish, Miss Hardcastle and Lady Teazle during her management of the Vaughan-Conway company, 1886-1887. Touring took her to Australia and South Africa. She died in 1903. The pencil drawing portrait of her, reported as unlocated in the GCP, has since been found; possibly it is a costume design by C. Wilhelm (1859-1925) for an unknown production. (OCT)
