Biography
Born on 6 April 1795, the son of a Lambeth physician, Charles Young was educated at Charterhouse School. He entered the College of Arms in 1813 and in 1820 was made York Herald. In 1842 he was appointed Garter principal King-of-Arms and was knighted. In his capacities as York Herald and Garter King he served as secretary to missions for investing European heads of state. He made numerous contributions to heraldic literature, most of them privately printed, and also to “Notes and Queries”. Sir Charles died at his house in Prince’s Terrace, Hyde Park, on 31 August 1869. He was one of the original members of the Garrick Club when it was formed in 1831. (DNB)
