Mathews was an original member of the Garrick Club in 1831. His remarkable collection of paintings and drawings came to the Garrick Club in 1835, and forms the nucleus of what has become an unrivalled collection of British theatrical portraits. He was a very popular comic actor, particularly known for his ‘At Home’ performances, one-man shows in which he offered a series of imitations and played a variety of characters.
