Recognised as the first great English actress, Elizabeth Barry made her debut on the London stage as Draxilla in Oxway’s “Alcibiade” at Covent Garden in late September 1675. She retired after the season 1709-10. Her magnetic intensity was at best in such roles as Roxalana in “The Rival Queens”, Calista in “The Fair Penitent”, and Lady Macbeth.
