Exhibition history
1902 london R.A. (489)
Dame Lilian wears a white dress with flounced sleeves and a selection of gold and turquoise jewellry. She is shown in a feigned oval, imitating 17th and 18th century portrait practice.
Made a DBE in 1943, Lilian Braithwaite appeared in numerous new plays and revivals of the classics. She played Abby Brewster in the first London production of “Arsenic and Old Lace”, which opened in 1942 and ran for three years. She was the first wife of the actor Gerald Lawrence (1873-1957). Their daughter, the actress Joyce Carey, gave this portrait to the Club.
