Exhibition history
1833 London, Queen's Bazaar, Oxford Street, "Mr Mathews's Gallery of Theatrical Portraits" (140)
In Act V, scene 12, Item, a dishonest steward, attempts to recover his account book from his nephew Clement, who has found it on a table. The account book chronicles Item's dirty dealings, and he pleads with Clement, "My dear nephew! my good boy! My kind Clement! I'll suply all your wants! I'll pay your debts! I'll never deny any thing you want!" Item wears a brown coat and waistcoat and a curly brown wig. He scratches the palm of his left hand in a cambistic manner.
Holcroft's comedy was first performed at Covent Garden on 2 May 1795. It was based partly on Richard Cumberland's comedy, “The Fashionable Lover”. Quick was the original Item. Cherry did not act the role in London during the eighteenth century. See G0114.
