Engraving history
Relates to Robert Cooper for Terry's “British Theatrical Gallery” pub. H. Berthoud Jnr 1822, stipple & line 19.7 x 14.6 (full-length to l., kneeling, r. h. on chest, l. h. pointing to sword on ground)
Only the head has been finished by the artist. The rest of the picture is sketched in with brown underpaint over a cream ground.
Kean played Richard III at Drury Lane for the first time on 12 February 1814. His portrayal was an immediate success and remained his most popular role.
Adams's identification of the subject rests on the mistaken assumption that this study is preparatory for Clint's large scene from “A New Way to Pay Old Debts”, G0355.
