Provenance

The Morning Herald 22 March 1794 records this painting by Gainsborough Dupont in the Thomas Harris collection at Belmont. It was subsequently sold at auction by George Robins in 1819 (lot 41) together with many other paintings by Dupont most of which were bought by Charles Mathews. The painting of John Fawcett however was not bought by Mathews. There are records of it being sold twice more at auction: first at Christies in London, 7th February 1910 [lot 59] and later at Phillips in London, 20th April 1993 [lot 34]. On both occasions the painting was attributed to George Clint (1770-1854). Bought by the Garrick Club at Christies South Kensington 29 October 2010 [lot 124], again attributed to George Clint.
