The painting was comissioned by Sir David's wife from the artist Ted Jones. Kindly donated to the Garrick Club in 2021 by Sir David Suchet.

Portrait of Sir David Suchet in the character of Shylock in the Royal Shakespeare Compnay production of 'The Merchant of Venice', in 1981. The play was directed by John Barton. Suchet was awarded an Olivier award for his performance. In the painting Shylock is dressed as a wealthy 19th century business man, with an expensive frock coat with a fur trim, silver watch chain, and holding a cigar.
