Faded inscription reads: " Charlotte Cushman's/ Lock of hair given by/ Sallie Mercer/ Newport Aug 8th 76" Written over the top in a different hand, most likely Genevienve Ward's and darker pen is "her coloured maid/ Genevieve Ward". Label on reverse reads; "Hair of Charlotte Cushman (Born 1816 - Died 1876) Presented to the Garrick Club by Genevieve Ward March 1920."
