Seal of David Garrick turning to a bust of Shakespeare with impression
Quo me raps tui plenum?
Purchased from Timothy Mallett in 2010.
The gem by Nathaniel Marchant was exhibited at the Scociety of Artists in 1773, no 168 "A sulphur from the intaglio. Mr Garrick turning to a bust of Shakespear with this exclamation: Quo me rapis tui plenum?" The inscription alludes to Horace Odes III.25.1-2, Quo me Bacche rapis tui plenum, 'Where, O Bacchus, are you carrying me off to, so full [of your wine]?'.
