David Garrick in the character of Sir John Brute, dressed in women's clothes raises a club. He is facing the right, and the skirts have lifted to reveal a a stockinged breeches. The scene comes from Act IV of Vanbrugh's play 'The Provoked Wife'. This print was reproduced in 'Sayer & Smith's Dramatic Characters or different portraits of the English Stage (1769-1773)'. The original image is by Jean Louis de Faesch, who was a miniaturist who painted on vellum. A book of his paintings is held in the collection of the Duke of Northumberland, which is what Robert Sayer used to create the prints, and explains the inscription on the bottom of the page.
