David Garrick in the character of Sir John Brute, sits slumped in a chair. The scene comes from Act V, scene II of Vanbrugh's play 'The Provoked Wife'. This print was reproduced in 'Sayer & Smith's Dramatic Characters or different portraits of the English Stage (1769-1773)'. The original image is by Jean Louis de Faesch, who was a miniaturist who painted on vellum.
