"Based on Euripides' 'The Bacchae', Henze's opera / 'The Bassarids' concerns the arrival of the wild cult of / Dionysus in the city of Thebes and the attempts of the / puritanical King Pentheus to oppress its orgiastic / rituals. In doing so, however, he ignores the natural / Dionysian instincts in himself, and the opera shows / the tragically destructive results his repression / brings on himself, his family and his society. The / librettists, W H Auden and Chester Kallman, have / adapted the classical original to underline modern / themes clearly and dramatically, and this is matched / by the heroic scale of conception in Henze's beautiful / score. The result is one of the greatest modern / adaptations of ancient myth and a genuine modern / tragedy that is intensely powerful in its impact."
