This print depicts the actor and comedian Charles Mathews in one of the characters he created whilst in the United States of America, called Jonathan Doolittle, who he described as a Yankee. When he returned from America he gave a performance called ' John Bull at Home or Jonathan in England', which was an adaptation of Colman's 'Who wants a Guinea?' Jonathan is described as a " busy, talkative, native of one of the eastern states - speculator in everything - auctioneer, bank and insurance director..."
