This print depicts the actress Mary Ann Davenport in the character of Mrs Grundy, though often thought to be from the play 'Speed the Plough' by Thomas Morton, Geoffrey Ashton in the catalogue for the Garrick Club says that there is no Mrs Grundy in 'Speed the Plough'. The Garrick Club has the original painting by Samuel de Wilde which was once owned by Charles Mathews. In Mathews' own list he provides the line that goes with the play: ""What, drinking again! I'll tell you it's both immoral and genteel". This line does not appear in 'Speed the Plough' nor in 'The Birthday'
