Thi print depicts the actor Charles Pitt in the character of Charly Wag taken from an adaptation of the sensational penny dreadful: 'Charly Wag, or the new Jack Sheppard' which was published anonymously in 1860. Charly Wag, like the thief Jack Sheppard, has a hard childhood, and becomes a successful robber. He is also gallant and chivalrous as he saves an aristocratic lady from a burning building. It is possible that it was adapted for the stage by Augustus Sala.
