This print depicts the comic actor Henry Gattie in the role of Papillion in the play 'The Maid and the Magpie' by Henry J. Byron. It was published in William Oxberry's 'New English Drama' in 1823. Gattie is depicted half length, looking to the right, one hand slightly raised. His hair has been styled with two roll curls over each ear and a quiff on top. He wears a carvat tied into a large bow at his neck. The costume for Papillion looks very similar to that of another characer played by MrGattie: Monsr. Morbleu in the play 'Monsieur Tonson'.
