This engraving depicts Charles Mathews and some of his favourite characters, which were portrayed in a one man show called 'Mathew's Home Circuit, or Cockney Gleanings'. The central roundal depicts five such characters against a brown back ground. Thee others a placed in the corners outside the central picture. The final figure, in the bottom right, is of Mathews himself, who is depicted in his striped pyjamas, watching or imaginging all the characters.
