This print depicts a scene from Thomas Haynes Bayly's farce called 'One House, or the Carnival Ball". It was first produced at the Olympic Theatre, 11th January 1836. It was the first time Charles James Mathews, son of Charles Mathews, acted with Madame Vestris. He had joined her company in December 1835. The print depicts an interior scene of a masked ball. Madame Vestris, stands to the left, with Charles Mathews on the right. She appears to be wearing possibly an Turkish or Eastern costume, while he wears a dark jacket and breeches with spotted stockings. In his left hand he holds a mask that he has just removed.
