This book illustration is possibly the frontispiece for Hood's Comic Annual published 1834. The central image depicts a grinning man, with a banner between his teeth with the dates 1833-1834 on. Above this is an interior scene of Charles Mathews reading aloud to family members who are laughing heartily. Around the central images are various humerous sketches, on the top left are some sketches of male heads, around a bandy legged many wearing a toga, called Cassius. Top right is an image of a snail, below that is a tall thin man painting or plastering a wall. The bottom corner images possibly show Charles Mathews reciting one of hi monopolylogues to an audience. The scene is set behind Mr Mathews to stands behind a cloth covered table on the left, and on the right is shown seated.
