This print depicts Edmund Kean standing full length, in profile, facing left. He is wearing roman costume, consisting of a red toga, with a yellow trim and red sandals. His hair is short but curled. The play 'Brutus; or the fall of Tarquin' was written by Howard Payne and was first performed at Drury Lane on the 3rd of December 1818. The play centres on the Lucius Brutus who leads a rebellion against his tyranical father, Lucius Tarquinius, and established a Roman Republic. The play was a great sucess and ran for twenty three consecutive nights, before closing for Christmas then returning for a further fifty three nights.
