This illustration by Robert Cruikshank was published in 'The English Spy' in 1824. It depicts a society of Old Etonians in a pub who have collected or stolen some pub signs. On the right of the group dressed in a green jacket and breeches with a white apron is the chracter of Sam Swipes from Theodore Hook's play 'Exchange no Robbery'. This is an example of John Liston's characters appearing in non theatrical prints but entering into the visual language when cartoonists needed to portray a comic figure.
