This print depicts John Liston introduction the son of the comedian Charles Mathews onto the stage for his very first performance. Charles Mathews senior had recently died, and Charles James Mathews made his first appearance at the Olympic Theatre, in December 1835 as Tim Topple opposite Liston who played a coachman. The PLay was written by Leman Rede.
