In the late 1880's the Cotswold village of Broadway became a retreat for many artists and writers of that period. William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti regularly used The Tower as their retreat. It was particularly known for an Anglo-American colony of artists, made up of Francis D. Millett, Edwin Austin Abbey, then later John Singer Sargeant. Writer such as J.M.Barrie and Henry James also lived there. In 1890 when Mary Anderson married the American barrister, Antionio Fernando de Navarro, and they settled in Court Farm, in Broadway.
