Hand-coloured bromide photographic postcard depicting Dame Gladys Cooper, seemingly not in character. She wears a floor-length long-sleeved light blue dress with long brown belt, white heeled shoes and a white hat with black ribbon. She is pictured in front of a garden backdrop with pink roses and a small garden table and chairs, she leans against the table and looks towards the camera. There is a white border imprinted with leaves and horseshoes.
The reverse has a birthday message addressed to Miss Pinder and is postmarked 2 April 1917.
Gladys Cooper (1888-1971) was a celebrated actress of the stage and screen, with a career spanning seven decades. She was renowned for her beauty; she became a photographic model in the early 1900s and was famous for her appearance on many picture postcards of the time. Postcards were cheap and reliable and were bought not just to send messages but to keep as souvenirs.
