Hand-coloured bromide photographic postcard depicting Dame Gladys Cooper, seemingly not in character, with her son John Buckmaster. Gladys wears a dark top and John wears a dark red knitted jumper with green cuffs and collar, they both look towards the camera. On the front there is a birthday message that reads: 'I send a wish for birthday joy, but oh! I know quite well that all the hopes I hold for you are more than tongue can tell.' There is a white border of imprinted flowers.
The reverse has a message addressed to Miss Pinder from Mother, postmarked 2 April 1921.
Gladys Cooper (1888-1971) was a celebrated actress of the stage and screen, with a career spanning seven decades. She was renowned for her beauty; she became a photographic model in the early 1900s and was famous for her appearance on many picture postcards of the time. Postcards were cheap and reliable and were bought not just to send messages but to keep as souvenirs.
