Title

Cabinet card, unidentified man

Dimensions

height: 21.5cm
width: 13cm

This is a Boudoir Portrait card - similar to a cabinet card but slightly larger. It depicts a man in the character of Eliah Coombe from the play The Silver King by Henry Arthur Jones and Henry Herman. It was first performed by Wilson Barrett's company at the Princess's Theatre in 1882. It was hugely successful and had performances in the United States, India, South African and Australia. This photograph was made by Tassle & Co, who describe themselves as a "San Fransico Portrait Parlours" but give their address at "82 Elizabeth Street Melbourne". This suggests that the actor who played this role, got the image made in Australia. It therefore could be an Australian actor or a British actor on tour.
The man wears a top hat, waistcoat, trousers and a long jacket. He stands with his hands in his pocket and his knees bent suggesting old age.
On the reverse is an inscription:
"Come gentlemen no larks with the poor young fellow if you've got his money give it back to him/ Eliah Coombe/ Silver King/ [illegible name] Esq"
This line comes from Scene 1, Act 1 in the play.
