This postcard depicts Maria Germanova in the role of Grushenka in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s play 'The Brothers Karamazov'.
Germanova was an early member of the Moscow Art Theatre (MAT), which was formed in 1898. The actor Konstantin Stanislavski and his co-founder, the writer and drama teacher, Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, wanted to break away from the state-run theatres, bring back high standards and professionalism in acting, and strive towards emotional truth and realism in their performances. In 1910, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s 1880 novel, ‘The Brothers Karamazov’ was adapted for the stage by Nemirovich-Danchenko and produced by the Moscow Art Theatre.
The play follows the story of Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov and his three sons. The character depicted by Germanova is Grushenka, a young, beautiful 22-year-old, whose affections the father and eldest son compete for. She wears a long black cloak and hood.
The postcard was published by A. A. Gorozhankin, Moscow.
