This photograph by Angus McBean depicts Sir John Gielgud as King Lear in the production of Shakespeare's 'King Lear' at Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon for the 1950 Festival. Gielgud co-produced the play with Anthony Quayle. He starred alongside Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies as Regan, Peggy Ashcroft as Cordelia, and Maxine Audley as Goneril. There is an accompanying programme to the photograph.
