Black and white photographic postcard depicting actress Mrs Emilie Charlotte ('Lillie') Langtry as Marie Antoinette in 'The Royal Necklace'. This is an advance publicity photograph of Langtry by Lafayette for 'The Royal Necklace', a play in four acts by Pierre and Claude Breton, produced by Lillie Langtry for the re-opening of the Imperial Theatre on 22 April 1901. Langtry is depicted in three-quarter length, standing to the left, and her costume is described in Act I, Scene 2 as: '...of the richest royal blue velvet, made with the full pleats of the day below the waist at the back, and worn with a pleated silver-grey silk petticoat and a huge black picture hat, "laced" at one side with satin.'
The reverse has a message addressed to Miss A Bird, Upcott House, Bishops Hull, Taunton, and reads 'Wishing you many happy returns of the day, Yours L.'
