Carte-de-visite depicting actor John Clayton as Joseph Surface in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's 'The School for Scandal', performed at the Vaudeville Theatre in 1872. He is depicted half length and facing the left. He wears a traditional late-18th century Gerogian period costume consisting of an embroidered tailcoat and waistcoat, white ruffled shirt and cravat.
