White marble; on red composition column with black base 107 h., c. 25 diam., base 27.5 sq.
"G / 1879" (verso); "MARIE BANCROFT / H. S. H. COUNT GLEICHEN / PRESENTED TO THE GARRICK CLUB / BY S. B. BANCROFT" (incised in column and touched in with gold)
Sir Squire Bancroft, by whom presented c. 1893
1880 London, R.A. (1583)
See S0002 with which it forms a pair
There is some damage to the base of this bust. Lady Bancroft was the wife of Sir Squire Bancroft.
The Bancrofts took over the Haymarket in 1879, and their management opened there on 31 January 1880. It seems likely that the busts (S0001 and S0002) were commissioned to celebrate the event, and, possibly, to decorate one of the foyers.
