Sarah Siddons (called)
Plaster Medallion painted to resemble terracotta; oval (ebonised wooden frame 33.5 x 31.5)
“Mrs. Sarah Siddons / Who lived at 27 Upper....” (pen & ink on paper covering verso); “Terra Cotta Placque / supposed to have / been modelled / by Sarah Siddons / personally” (pen & ink on Miss Dethridge's visiting card); “to the Garrick Club / July 1932” (verso of visiting card)
Presented to the Garrick Club by Miss Dethridge, 1932
Gift 491 [with a chair and two swords]
Although this profile bears some general resemblance to Siddons, it is perhaps simply an ideal head of a type popular in the neo-classical period. It has the soft modelling seen in the self-portrait bust in the Theatre Museum.
