Toole wears a dark grey suit with satin lapels, white wing collar, stiff cuffs, and a red tie. A gold chain hangs at his breast. He sits in a mahogany chair, upholstered in green leather.
Toole, actor and manager, became a member of the Garrick Club in 1864. His close friend Irving owned this picture. He was also a friend of Dickens, in whose “A Christmas Carol” he appeared as Bob Cratchit in 1859.
