Exhibition history

1833 London, Queen's Bazaar, Oxford Street, "Mr Mathews's Gallery of Theatrical Portraits" (103)?

The sitter, shown half-length, wears a dress with a blue bodice and a large black hat with a band of large pearls.
CKA tentatively suggests that the sitter is Frances Kemble, and that the artist is Downman (to correspond with Mathews's No.103). Stylistcally, however, the picture does not seem to be Downman's work, and RW's identification of the sitter as Mrs Whitlock appears more likely to be correct. The BD (16: 51) attributes the picture to Thomas Beach and calls it Mrs Whitlock. See G0841.
