Exhibition history
1824 London, R. A. (736) (Portrait of Miss Stephens, in the character of Mrs Ford, in the Merry Wives of Windsor)
Mrs Ford wears a headpiece with roses and a veil. Her pink dress is decorated with gold bands edged in black. The dog-toothing down the skirt is a romantic indication that the costume is meant to reflect 16th-century fashion. A view of Windsor Great Park is seen to the right.
“The Merry Wives” was revived at Drury Lane on 20 February 1824, with Catherine Stephens as Mrs Ford. It was performed frequently until 8 April 1824, and was then seen occasionally until 24 May 1824, but with Mme Vestris in the part of Mrs Page.
