This print depicts Charles James Mathews as Tim in the play 'The Old and Young Stager' by Leman Rede. It was performed at the Olympic Theatre is 1835. It was written so that the comedian John Liston, who played the old coachman, Topple, in the play, could introduce to the aucdience the son of his dear friend, Charles Mathews senior. This was the acting debut of Charles James Mathews, and in a way the play allows him to take up the mantle of his father. Charles Mathews is depicted full length, wearing a jacket, riding boots, and a green cravat. He holds a bridle and reins in one hand, the other hand is in his pocket.
