This postcard depicts Nikolai Osipovich Massalitinov in the role of Professor Gilling in Knut Hamsun's play 'At the Gate of the Kingdom'.
Massalitinov joined the Moscow Art Theatre (MAT) in 1907, which had been formed nine years earlier in 1898. The actor Konstantin Stanislavski and his co-founder, the writer and drama teacher, Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, wanted to break away from the state-run theatres, bring back high standards and professionalism in acting, and strive towards emotional truth and realism in their performances. Norwegian playwright Knut Hamsun wrote 'At the Gate of the Kingdom' in 1895 and it was performed by the Moscow Art Theatre in 1909.
'At the Gate of the Kingdom' was the first of a trilogy, followed by 'The Game of Life' in 1896 and 'Sunset Glow' in 1898. The trilogy follows Ivar Kareno, a 29-year-old philosopher, student and rebel, who is accompanied by various characters, including Professor Gilling.
Massalitinov is depicted in three-quarter length and standing facing the left. He wears a long black heavy coat, his hands are in his pockets, and he has a long white beard.
