This postcard depicts Vera Fyodorovna Komissarzhevskaya in the role of Varya in Aleksander Ostrovsky’s play ‘Dikarka’.
Aleksander Ostrovsky wrote ‘Dikarka’, sometimes translated as ‘The Savage’, in 1879. Komissarzhevskaya starred in the role of Varya in an unknown production around 1903.
Komissarzhevskaya plays the character of Varya Zubareva, a young beautiful girl who is unknowingly part of a scheme conjured up by the wife of a wealthy landowner, to prevent him from travelling and to keep him at home with her. His wife’s manipulative plan backfires when a real infatuation develops between the two.
Komissarzhevskaya is depicted half-length, her body facing the left and she looks towards the viewer. She wears a long white tunic with multiple beaded necklaces and a headscarf.
